We LOVE the Calvin and Hobbes series and have read it over and over and over again! When Audrey got her haircut before school started she loved that she resembled Susie Derkins and that’s when the idea to dress up as Susie and Hobbes stemmed from.
Every year we create a fun picture (see Astrid + Stormfly, and Hilda + Twig, and Hermione + Ginny). So we got to work reading the series again in search for the perfect picture. This might be the only block of comic where Hobbes is a real life tiger with Susie in the scene. Usually he appears as a stuffed tiger whenever Susie enters. To be fair we only searched through 7 or 8 books before giving up because we loved this scene so much we thought it’d be hard to beat.
Here’s the comic strip we took it from.
And of course we like to carve our pumpkins to match our theme. This year, because of Covid-19 trick or treating was cancelled. But we still wanted to capture our Halloween adventure like we do every year. We just had to do it a little differently this time. We thought it would be fun to go for a Halloween walk with our Calvin pumpkin and take pictures with the decorations while I give my children candy for letting me take pictures. Win win! So off we went!
The streets were relatively quiet. But every so often we had someone call us over. “Hey, we have a candy shoot!” And my goodness were those shoots the best idea!!
One family even had a giant spider with glowing red eyes holding a bucket that would slide along a string from the porch to the sidewalk! It was brilliant!
And some people just put candy out for kids to help themselves. Don’t worry, all that unexpected candy is in quarantine.
The night ended wonderfully by stopping at our friends house to sit in the back yard around the fire pit. Needless to say, our Halloween wasn’t a disappointment at all! But we do hope things are more normal next year.
